Rhythmic Pathways: Music for Family Connection
Introducing Rhythmic Pathways: Music for Family Connection, an initiative made possible by generous funding from the Van Beuren Foundation. We are passionate about increasing access to music therapy services to 20 substance-exposed newborns and their caregivers/families, with a special focus serving those in Newport County.
Eligibility Criteria:
Rhythmic Pathways: Music for Family Connection is a pilot program that aims to provide support and services to newborns (0-3) and their families and caregivers who have been affected by substance exposure. To determine eliability for participation in the program, the following critera will be considered:

-
Age: Newborns between ages of 0-3
-
Substance Exposure: Families and caregivers with newborns who have been prenatally exposed to substances, including but not limited to opioids, alcohol, or other substances, are eligible to participate.
-
Geographical Location: Priority will be given to families residing in Newport County, Rhode Island, although families from neighboring areas may also be considered on a case-by-case basis.
-
Referral: Families may be referred to the program by various community partners, including Early Intervention facilities, Newport Hospital, Parent Support Network, and pediatricians.
Treatment Approach:
The Rhythmic Pathway pilot program uses a client-centered and evidence-based treatment approach to meet the unique needs of newborns and caregivers affected by substance exposure.

-
Assessment: Music therapists conduct an initial assessment to determine the specific needs, strengths, and challenges of each newborn and caregiver. The assessment informs the development of individualized treatment plans and music preference and includes consultation with the treatment team, including the family/caregiver.
-
Individual Music Therapy Sessions: Each family participating in the program receives four (4) individual music therapy sessions facilitated by a music therapist, in the comfort of their home to personalize music and develop a Song of Kin (lullaby of personal meaning to the family). These sessions are personalized to address specific goals, such as emotional regulation, bonding, and communication.
-
Group Music Therapy Sessions: Upon completion of the individual sessions, families are invited to participate in an 8-week music therapy group facilitated by a licensed board-certified music therapist in collaboration with a Developmental Specialist. Group sessions incorporate various musical activities, including singing, playing instruments together, creative expression, and relaxation interventions.
For Community Parnters:
-
Identify Eligible Families: Professionals working with newborns and caregivers, such as Early Intervention providers, healthcare professionals, pediatricians, and community partners, should identify families who meet the eligibility criteria for the program.
-
Inform and Educate Families: Once eligible families are identified, professionals should engage in open communication, providing information about the "Music Therapy and Prenatal Substance Exposure in RI" program. Educate families about the benefits of music therapy and how it can support their needs and challenges.
-
Obtain Consent: Seek consent from the families to proceed with the referral process. Ensure that families fully understand the nature of the program and the involvement of music therapy in their child's care.
-
Submit Referral: Submit the referral to the Hands in Harmony Music Therapy Program using the designated contact information provided. Include relevant details about the family, such as contact information, newborn's age, substance exposure history, and any specific concerns or goals that may assist the music therapists in tailoring the interventions.
-
Follow-Up and Consultation: Hands in Harmony will review the referral and contact the family/caregiver to initiate the intake and assessment process. Professionals involved in the referral should be prepared to collaborate with the music therapy team, providing any necessary additional information or insights to support the family's journey.
